Nanaimo Theatre Group is looking to frighten with its production of The Woman in Black.
The show focuses on character Arthur Kipps, a man in his 60s who had a terrifying experience in his youth that continues to haunt him. He enlists the help of a professional actor to prepare him to share the tale with his friends and family.
Shannon Reimer and Laura Buechler are directing the production, which is adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the book by Susan Hill.
“From our first read-through, we were fascinated with the eerie atmosphere of this show, especially in how the story comes to life almost in spite of the characters’ efforts,” noted a directors' message on the theatre group’s website. “We were also excited about the particular power of live theatre when it comes to creating a terrifying experience: you can’t pause the action or put down the book; you are fully immersed in this immediate moment.”
Kipps and his unnamed actor friend experiment throughout the play with how to tell the story and the audience will find themselves immersed in the terrifying events of the character’s past, according to a news release from the theatre group.
“The past comes alive, the peril draws near and we begin looking over our shoulder for a frightening woman dressed in black,” the release said.
The directors' message added that anyone who likes a spine-chilling, suspenseful experience will enjoy the show.
“Having been successfully staged by both professional and amateur theatre groups all over the world for nearly 40 years, The Woman in Black has garnered a loyal following and continues to attract new audiences. Its longevity speaks to its ability to captivate and thrill audiences of all ages,” the directors said.
Opening night is April 23 and the production will be shown until May 11 at the Bailey Studio. Tickets can be purchased from http://nanaimotheatregroup.ca.
