Hip hop, Christmas, tributes, puppets, and a Scottish Drag Queen, CPAC stage in November

Help yourself to some hip hop and kick off the cold season with B.C.'s Snotty Nose Rez Kids on Nov. 6

The Cowichan Performing Arts Centre chills into the month of November with an eclectic mix of cool events and concerts with something unique for everyone. Treat yourself to tributes galore including Johnny Cash, CCR, and The Rolling Stones, a night of the movies, cool concerts, a Scottish Drag Queen and a puppet show like no other.

On Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m., the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre kicks off the cold season with Snotty Nose Rez Kids, a hip-hop duo hailing from the Haisla Nation in Kitimat. SNRK dove into the music scene with a unique name, and an incredible talent showing off their lyrical prowess and natural storytelling ability when the twosome of Yung Trybez, and Young D jump-started the band with two back-to-back albums in 2017. However, it was their follow up album TRAPLINE which was released in 2019 that that really launched their career with hit 'Boujee Natives,' and multiple awards including their first Juno nomination.

SNRK have gone on to dominate in Hip-Hop music, most recently achieving their biggest milestone with their signing to Sony Music.

On Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m., steer your self to CPAC to see Vanocuver's own The Washboard Union for their Grab The Wheel and Go Tour. They will be joined by special guest Tony Stevens. The Washboard Union — step-brothers Aaron Grain, Chris Duncombe and their best friend David Roberts — have earned their spot as one of Canada’s top country bands. To date, they have won a Canadian Country Music Award for Group of the Year three times consecutively, and remain the only country group to ever win a Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year. Most recently, The Washboard Union was nominated for two 2024 CCMA Awards for Group of the Year and Special of the Year for 'A Washboard Union Christmas.' Tickets are $56.

On Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. get into the holiday spirit early with the Jann Arden Christmas Tour.

Alberta's Arden will put her own unique spin on some Christmas classics that are featured on her 2015 album A Jann Arden Christmas. Arden, who is a multi-platinum award-winning singer/songwriter, is also an actor, has been a judge on Canadian Idol, and is also a best-selling author. She has eight Juno Awards under her guitar strap including Female Artist of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year — not to mention 10 SOCAN and four Western Canadian Music Awards. Arden has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, she has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, and is even a recipient of the Order of Canada. Tickets range from $77 to 93.50.

On Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m., keep your finger on the pulse of the Duncan arts scene, and come out to see Ingrid Hansen keep you in the palm of her hand with Epidermis Circus: the weirdest puppet show you've ever seen. Containing cartoonish sexual content, swear words, puppet suicide, dark lighting, loud music, and other spicy surprises this show is rated 14-plus. Hansen, who also puppeteers for Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock, will serve up a handful of cheeky vignettes that will be projected onto a huge screen. Regular tickets are $25, students are $15.

On Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. come see what all the 'Commotion' is about as Completely Creedence take the CPAC stage with their to Creedence Clearwater Revival. Known for bringing all the classic hits and energy of CCR to audiences across the country, this talented group of musicians will perform hits such as 'Proud Mary', 'Bad Moon Rising', and 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain'. Get tickets for $52.50.

On Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. 'Walk the Line' down to the theatre for an afternoon with The Men in Black as they perform a tribute to the legacy of Johnny Cash — the man of the same shade who recorded 96 albums with more than 1,500 songs over the span of five decades, and was one of the first artists to successfully cross over many musical genres from country, to rockabilly, gospel and rock & roll.

The Men In Black consist of Gary Coad on lead vocals, Aaron Murray on guitar, Wayne Cox on bass, and keeping the beat is Mark Roth on drums. They'll be joined by special guest Tracee Rees. Hear hits such as 'Folsom Prison Blues', 'Ring of Fire', 'Orange Blossom Special' and many more. Tickets are $47.50.

On Nov. 25, at 7 p.m. start the night off write and spend a night at the movies as Reel Alternatives presents the comedy Wicked Little Letters.  

This 'Who Wrote It' follows the people of Littlehampton, including a conservative local woman named Edith, when they begin receiving letters full of hilarious profanities. When the rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime the town's women suspect that something is amiss and begin to investigate down to the letter.

Take note, that the concession will be open with snacks and drinks, along with coffee and tea, available for purchase. All proceeds go directly to benefiting individuals and families in Cowichan Valley by ensuring Cowichan Hospice services are available when they need them. Tickets are $17.

On Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m., take the holiday season to a new height with A Rocky Mountain High Christmas. 

Enjoy the timeless tunes of John Denver coupled with Christmas classics with special guests the Rocky Mountain High Philharmonic Orchestra, the Nanaimo Youth Choir and from the touring production of Music of the Night soprano Melina Schein.  

Audience members can expect a deep dive into to Denver's repertoire as they sing along to all his classics including some cherished Christmas songs from his iconic TV special with The Muppets, and his acclaimed Rocky Mountain Christmas album. This evening aims to celebrate the music rather than try to imitate the legendary artist. Tickets are $54.

Those looking for something a little different won't want to drag their feet to see the Christmas special God Is A Scottish Drag Queen.  

West coast performer and comedian Mike Delamont, who has appeared on several comedy stages, is back by popular demand in this holiday hoot playing God dressed in an all new holiday power suit. In this Christmas special God sets the record straight and expounds on everything from the beginnings of Christmas with Yule, Saturnalia and Winter Solstice, to holiday foods, Christmas carols, Star Wars, the true story of the Nativity, and even Tiny Tim.

So head to CPAC for 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 for a hilarious look a the holidays and beyond. Tickets are $49.

On Nov. 30, at 8 p.m. retro rock lovers will want to satisfy their souls and senses with Got Stones! — The Rolling Stones Experience. Capturing the essence of this legendary band who just released their 24th studio album Hackney Diamonds last year is a talented troupe of veteran musicians who will have you jumping in the aisles like your name is 'Jack Flash' as they rock out all the hits. Tickets are $45.
