The Harbour City Photography Club’s Photo Salon exhibition is back and in-person and submissions are now welcome.
Professional and amateur photographers from across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands have until April 16 to submit up to three images to be considered for the HCPC’s annual Photo Salon, which for the first time since 2019 will be taking place at VIU’s View Gallery this summer.
HCPC president Rooney Dumler said the club is hoping for 150 entries to this year’s show, which she says is an “ambitious” goal.
“The last year we had it it was gaining momentum and we all knew that the quality was going up, too, so we were so excited and I think there were about 130 entries,” she said.
The adjudicators choosing this year’s successful submissions are photographers Rick Hulbert from North Vancouver, Lynda Miller of the Okanagan and Victoria resident Richard Shapka. They will be judging photographs based on how well they portray the subject matter, tell a story or create an emotion, illustrate technical expertise, show an original or personal interpretation and fit the category definition.
The adjudicated categories are landscape, wildlife/nature, artistic/digital art as well as an open category, which could cover portraits, cityscapes, still lifes, architecture, sports and botany.
“We felt like, getting our salon back in action, we had to have very broad, umbrella categories for our salon so that we can draw more people back in again,” Dumler said.
This year a non-adjudicated category has been added to the competition: environmental photojournalism.
“I think we had to acknowledge what we’ve been going though, what’s happening in our world,” Dumler said of adding the new category. “We can’t escape the news … and I think photography has done it’s bit to capture historical events in that way and to make commentary on them.”
Dumler said there will be awards for first, second and third place in each adjudicated category, well as two people’s choice awards. The award adjudicators are photographers Rick Leche from Black Creek, Victoria’s Lorna Zaback and VIU graphic design instructor Ellen McCluskey.
“It’s a really valuable experience to look at your work and identify what you like and why you like it and then take it to that level of printing it out and putting it on a wall for others to look at,” Dumler said.
