You’ll feel the earth move under your feet when Beautiful: The Carole King Musical hits the stage of the Royal Theatre starting Jan. 31.
Focused on the early life and career of one of the most celebrated songwriters and performers in the history of American pop music, Beautiful features Kennedy Caughell as King, surrounded by a cast of 32 actors and musicians. The tour is coming hot on the heels of a Tony Award-nominated run on Broadway.
The performance will feature beloved hits from King, including a generous number of cuts from her second album, the 25-million selling Tapestry, from 1971. A staple of dusty record collections everywhere, Tapestry, which Rolling Stone declared the 36th greatest album of all time, featured such singalong fare as “So Far Away,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “It’s Too Late,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”
The play follows King through her early days as a hitmaker in the 1960s, writing with her then husband Gerry Goffin a series of popular songs for other performers, before recording her first hit as a performer with 1962’s “It Might as Well Rain Until September.” From there, as her personal life begins to fall apart, her rise to stardom begins.
Tickets for Beautiful start at $114.75 and can be purchased at rmts.bc.ca, by phone at 250-386-6121 or at the Royal Theatre box office.
