A concert will be held in Nanaimo to benefit an organization that sponsors LGBTQ refugees.
The concert, Nanaimo Without Borders, will take place on Saturday, May 21, from 7-9 p.m. in the atrium of the Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community at 347 Seventh St.
According to a release for the concert, all of the proceeds will go to Reaching Out Assisting Refugees, a volunteer organization dedicated to helping LGBTQ refugees from all around the world flee persecution in their home countries.
Brazilian-Canadian singer Dan Parker and his group, Bandeira Parker, will perform his signature bossa nova vocals in Portuguese, accompanied by jazz pianist Michael Anderson. Parker will also do the ‘off-the-wall’ improv for which he’s famous, as well as tunes with musicians Wes Raley and Rhianna Hunter Solomon.
Attendees can also expect to see Ammar Alfakosh, a former refugee from Syria, sing songs from his homeland, as well as a performance by Paul Manly with additional vocals provided by Myriam Verzat.
While entry to the event is free, organizers ask attendees for a suggested donation of $10, however, children are welcome and can attend for free. Attendees are also encouraged to wear masks, and be mindful of the sober environment.
