Youbou Witches Paddle was spooky fun

Witches and warlocks head out onto Cowichan Lake

The second annual Witches Paddle was a spooky success in Youbou on Oct. 5.

More than 30 witches and warlocks took off from Arbutus Park at 9:30 a.m. in kayaks and canoes and on paddle boards, according to Julia Martinusen, chair of the Youbou Community Association, who credited volunteer Julie Madden of Intention Wellness Space with organizing the event.

"The weather was cloudy but calm, perfect for a spooky paddle," said Martinusen. "This year, we had more spectators than last year, and many of them chose to dress up as well."

There were prizes awarded for the best decorated paddle-craft, best dressed witch, and best-dressed child. There was also face painting and crafts for the kids.

After the paddle everyone was invited to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee by the fire pit.

Prizes and refreshments were courtesy of the Youbou Community Association. Pristine Paddleboard Adventures offered paddle board rentals.
