West Coast General Hospital (WCGH) Foundation has helped the hospital purchase a new Mammotome for the operating room with a $90,000 donation. This biopsy device will allow for earlier detection of cancers in all patients, thus resulting in improved outcomes.
The WCGH Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for the hospital and Westhaven long-term care home for the purchase of major equipment.
“The support from our community over the last year has been extraordinary,” said the foundation's executive director Erin Williams. “Every donation has an impact and helps WCGH provide the best patient care possible for people who live, work and play in the Alberni Valley.”
The foundation has now started a “Situation is Critical” campaign to fundraise for a Haemobank Fridge for the lab at WCGH.
The Haemobank fridge works to support and supplement the work of medical lab technicians, setting up and releasing blood matches and products. Medical lab technicians are difficult-to-staff roles, so a technological solution to support them is an innovative solution that provides clinicians with safe, fast access to individual blood products where and when they are needed.
“At a cost of almost $200,000, we hope to have this piece of equipment in use at WCGH by this time next year,” said Williams. “We are well on our way, thanks to a large donation from an anonymous donor.”
