Well over 100 swimmers braved the blustery conditions to take part in the 2019 Boxing Day Polar Bear Swim at Goose Spit in Comox.
According to Comox Recreation programmer Amy Bauman, 144 people registered to take part in the 43rd annual event, with 100-plus spectators watching from the shoreline.
Eighty-five-year-old Chuck Arnold was the oldest registered participant, and two-year-old Verdella Hunter was the youngest.
Brittany Nut and Gillian Bromilow won the “Best Spirit” award, for dressing up as old ladies, wigs, canes and all!
The biggest group registered was Lindsey Kanary and family – a total of 10 people.
There was even a martial arts class, performing a kata in the water.
The event doubled as a fundraiser for the food bank. Two containers of food were collected, as well as approximately $120 in cash.
“Thank you to our sponsors: McDonald’s Comox Valley, Comox Fire Rescue, CVRD and the Eagle,” said Bauman.
