Traditional Chinese dance, Afro Fusion Sharqi Dance, tai chi and a kangoo dance demonstration will be some of the featured attractions at the upcoming Newcomer Wellness Fair.
Each year, the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society hosts a Newcomer Wellness Fair, which shows newcomers what Nanaimo has as far as local resources and creates connections in the community.
“It is essential to connect newcomers and everyone in the community with local organizations and services that provide valuable support," said Mikaela Torres, the society's executive director, in a press release. "At CVIMS, we believe these connections enrich lives and strengthen our community."
Attendees will have the opportunities to explore tables with information on wellness, recreation and cultural experiences, as well as a variety of other services.
For the first time, the society is partnering with Volunteer Nanaimo to host a volunteer fair at the same time and location, so that newcomers can also learn about local volunteer opportunities. The volunteer fair is expected to attract about 20 organizations.
"These organizations are looking forward to connect with volunteers from the newcomer community and the broader community," said Jansait Qughondouqa, CVIMS community engagement lead.
The Newcomer Wellness Fair place on Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Beban Park Social Centre. All community members are welcome to attend the free event. While walk-ins are welcome, pre-registration is encouraged at http://eventbrite.ca/e/1138945258929.
The event is supported by federal and provincial funding.
