Nanaimo RCMP’s Const. Bear is back in Nanaimo after a tour of wildfire fighting duty in Burns Lake, B.C.

Bear, which will ultimately plant his furry little paws in the Atlantic Ocean, was sent to Burns Lake with Const. Mike Gibson, according to a Nanaimo RCMP press release in mid August when Gibson was deployed to assist with home evacuations in the area.

From there, Bear was supposed to continue the journey across Canada, but as often happens when bears are relocated, Nanaimo RCMP’s, Bear found himself back in his old stomping grounds after hitching a ride home either with Gibson or another RCMP member, according to Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

“He liked him so much, he just couldn’t part ways with him, so he brought him back,” said O’Brien, who declined to offer more specific details about how the mini mascot ended up back in Nanaimo.

Bear is expected to resume his attempt to cross Canada sometime in the coming week, depending on any of Nanaimo RCMP members’ upcoming travel plans.

Updates will be posted as details about Bear’s cross-country sojourn unfold.
