Dragonboats will roar back into Nanaimo harbour.

The Nanaimo Dragonboat Festival is returning this summer, announced the Fairway Gorge Paddling Club, the new event hosts, in a press release. The festival will take place in the harbour and at Maffeo Sutton Park on July 9-10.

“After two long years of challenges because of COVID-19, the chance to race again in Nanaimo is a cause for celebration,” said Erik Ages, general manager of the non-profit Fairway Gorge Paddling Club, in the release.

He added that his club is grateful to be able to “build on the excellent work done by the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society.”

The Nanaimo festival is part of a new Vancouver Island Dragon Boat Race Series hosted by the Fairway Gorge Paddling Club. The series starts with sprint racing in Victoria in mid-May, followed by events in the Comox Valley, Nanaimo, and two more in Victoria.

“This is a great opportunity for all of us in the paddling community to return to regattas, have fun, and set the stage for many seasons to come,” Ages said.

Early-bird registration for the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival is already open at www.fgpaddle.com/races/fgpc-db-races.
