The #JankyJune contest is back in action.

A Greater Victoria pedestrian advocacy organization wants residents to highlight some of the region’s worst infrastructure through a social media contest.

Hosted by Walk On, Victoria, the aim is to have residents post photos of their least favourite sidewalk, intersection, crosswalk or other infrastructure mishaps on Instagram or Facebook with #JankyJune and tag @walkonvictoria for a chance to win one of two $50 cash prizes. Winners will be announced in July.

This is the second annual #JankyJune contest and is intended to raise awareness while advocating for safer, more comfortable walking infrastructure in Greater Victoria.

“Last year’s event was a real success,” Amanda Macdonald, chair of the organization, said in a statement. “It got people talking and thinking about how most of our built environment has been designed for cars, not people. While there have been many improvements to the pedestrian realm in more recent years, the contest is a fun way to highlight how many areas in the Capital Regional District are still sorely lacking safe and comfortable pedestrian infrastructure. We hope it helps spur local governments to commit to more improvements.”

Last year’s “winner” was the stretch of sidewalk in the 4100-block of Cedar Hill Road in Saanich that features a tree in the middle of it.

Entries are welcomed throughout June and may be shared on Walk On, Victoria’s social channels.
