Community support spilled from the lawn of Oak Bay municipal hall Thursday (May 25) as people from across the Capital Region gathered to raise funds for the family of Steve Seekins.
On May 17 around 8 a.m., a northbound driver on Monterey Avenue left the road and hit Seekins who was inspecting a manhole on the sidewalk. Police said there had been a pattern of erratic driving prior to the crash and continue to welcome video footage or witnesses from that morning who have not yet spoken to officers.

Seekins started working with the district late last fall, and as an auxiliary employee, worked with many different crews in a variety of roles, said Steve Rennick, deputy director of engineering and public works.
He was a genuine, easy-going guy who was excited to get to work in Oak Bay, Rennick said.
“He loved his wife and kids, talked about them all the time.”

The fundraiser on Oak Bay Avenue drew crowds Thursday, and an online fundraiser has raised more than $110,000 so far to support the family. Donate online at gofundme.com/f/collection-for-oak-bay-public-works-employee.
