Picturesque views are nothing new for Esquimalt residents, and that scenic beauty will now be even more prevalent throughout the community.
The Township of Esquimalt is moving forward with launching the revitalization of the street banner program in an effort to enhance the township's esthetic appeal.
For years, the municipality has displayed seasonal, memorial and community-themed banners on street lights throughout key areas and corridors. The new series of banners feature images of Esquimalt’s scenic views, like Saxe Point, Gorge Park and other popular locations.
"We are thrilled to be showcasing our local gems through this project,” said Mayor Barbara Desjardins in a news release. “We want residents, businesses and visitors to know that Esquimalt is the place to be.”
The newest iteration of the banners features photos taken by local photographer Deborah Price.
“I love the way a photo can elicit an emotion … often instantly. I love the way a photo can speak many different languages … all at once. I love the way a photo can take you somewhere you may not have been before … even if you were just there. And, I especially love being able to show people a little bit of the way I see the world," noted Price in a release.
The program will include the installation of 30 welcome banners and 84 fall and winter banners at entry points and other locations around the township. A "banner to bag" recycling initiative for worn banners is planned for spring 2025, as well as a call-for-artists program to seek future designs.
"The aim of the initiative is to create a cohesive series of banners that are uniquely Esquimalt, so that visitors feel welcome and residents see their community reflected in art. The project is a council priority and has an allocated budget," noted the release.
The new banners can be seen along Esquimalt Road.
Dates for upcoming initiatives are still in the planning stages, and details will come in early 2025.
