Chemainus woman wins $5,000 in Save On Foods gift cards from Facebook contest

The winnings from the company wide contest were given out by Ladysmith Save On

A Chemainus woman is the lucky winner of $5,000 in Save On Foods gift cards after she entered a Facebook contest.

The contest asked for a twist on Thanksgiving dinner recipes. Alana Starkie submitted her recipe for a leftover turkey dinner shepherd’s pie. She didn’t know what the prize was when she entered.

Now that Starkie has won the $5,000 she plans to pay it forward.

“I’m going to stretch it out as best I can for groceries for my family. But I’m also going to sponsor a family for Christmas from Chemainus for the hamper baskets that they do. I’ll try to do one or two families with that,” Starkie said.

Starkie also plans to donate to the food program at Chemainus Secondary where her daughter goes to school.

This isn’t the first time Starkie has won in a contest. Starkie is a “contester”. She avidly searches for contests to enter, and has won things like a trip across Canada, a trip to the Yukon, a drone, cash, and a year’s supply for Clearly Canadian sparkling water. Some call it luck, but Starkie says it comes down to effort.

“I always encourage people to get into it,” she said. “You have to enter to win. If you enter, you will eventually win. You just have to put in that little bit of effort. I always suggest to people who ask me, to enter contests that require a little bit of effort because less people enter them.”

The Save On contest was a company wide contest. Out of all the Save On locations across Western Canada, the winnings were administered through the Ladysmith Save On.

“It’s exciting to have somebody win in our own community,” store manager Ian Conn said. “For us to showcase that the winner was right here in our store out of the whole company in little small town Ladysmith is pretty cool.”

Conn said Save On runs promotions all year long, and encouraged Save On shoppers to be on the look out for opportunities as they pop up.
