Hey, it’s good to be back home again.

The line from the John Denver song fits the bill for Chemainus firefighter Alex Meyer.

He returned home from Vancouver General Hospital last week and, obviously, “he is very pleased to be in his own space again,” wife Ashley Meyer noted.

Alex, diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma in March of 2020, spent several weeks in hospital and as an outpatient while undergoing stem cell treatments.

“He’s doing fairly well all things considered and we are now waiting for follow-up scans and testing to be done to sort out where he’s at with his cancer now,” Ashley explained.

“He’s completed all the treatments they’ve scheduled at this point so now we just wait. Overall, he’s feeling strong but he definitely looks sick now. He’s lost all his hair and those dark circles have really picked up under his eyes.”

Alex has a doctors’ appointment this week via Zoom to hopefully provide some clarity on what happens next.

“We are happy to have him home and hope we find out soon where everything is at,” Ashley indicated.

After six months of chemotherapy that started last April and continued about every 12 days for the first round until Sept. 15, Alex was prepped for radiation, but it was decided not to go that route. Chemotherapy commenced again in late November and finished on Jan. 18 of this year.

That led to the stem cell treatments. Alex was fortunate he did not need a donor for the treatments.
