Tucker the cat may have one less leg but he still has a lot of life left to live, and he will soon be looking for a new home.
The orange tabby was recently surrendered to the Comox Valley & District SPCA after he was stepped on by a horse at his previous home, shattering his rear left leg. Due to the potential cost of the surgery, the original owner brought him to a vet clinic to be euthanized, but the one-year-old cat was instead put under the care of the SPCA.
“They couldn’t keep the cat and pay for it themselves which we totally understand,” said Jed McPherson, SPCA animal care attendant.
The vet assessed Tucker’s condition and due to the extent of the damage to the leg, he had no other option but to amputate it. The total cost of his medical treatment is expected to be nearly $1,400 and Tucker will have to stay at the SPCA for close to a month before he is ready to be adopted.
Each month, the SPCA saves many animals like Tucker whose owners just can’t take care of them anymore, and the organization is asking for donations to help cover the costs of rescuing these animals.
Tucker is recovering quickly from the surgery and he is awaiting a trip to the vet to get his stitches taken out. In a couple of weeks, he should be almost fully recovered and ready for a new home.
“A three-legged cat can get around just as well as a four-legged cat,” said McPherson. “He’s only a year old and he’s going to adjust really really well.”
By all accounts, Tucker is a very sweet and affectionate cuddle bug and loves everyone that comes to give him a pet.
