Victoria’s Chinatown was packed during the 2023 Awakening Chinatown Festival.
The event on Sunday (May 28) was a way to celebrate Asian Heritage Month and was organized by the Victoria Chinatown Museum Society with the help of many supporters.
The festival included demonstrations of traditional martial arts and lion dancing by the Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club, performances by traditional Chinese dance troupes, Asian opera singers, the Happy Drum Group, a seniors choir from the Victoria Society of Chinese Performing Arts and all-Asian drag review.
“It’s really fun,” Victoria Chinatown Museum Society director Ron Greene said. “It’s a vibrant community and it’s much larger than it used to be.”
The inaugural festival took place in 2022, and the event came back bigger and better this year.
“The festival was invented to bring people back downtown,” Greene said. “This one is three times as large as the first one. It was good last year, but it’s better this year.”
