It's time time to fly into the Campbell River Airport.
Sealand Aviation, the Campbell River Airport, and TeenFlight's annual Wings 'n Wheels event is back this July 14. The annual event happens every second Sunday in July.
"We had over 100 aircraft fly in last year," says Therisa Lowe, one of the event's organizers. "They stay here for the day on a static display, and we had over 300 classic cars last year, thanks to the North Island Cruisers who bring their club out and invite other clubs throughout the Island to come and join us."
Lowe says event organizers don't really know how many planes or cars will show up for event until it happens. Due to the weather, planes aren't able to preregister for the event, however, 100 cars have been registered as of July 8.
"Last year it was about the same thing until Friday night and then it blew up on Saturday because then people know (about the weather conditions) they are going to go tomorrow and then they register," she says.
Lowe expects similar numbers to last year's events.
In addition to the planes and cars, the Campbell River Kinsmen will be hosting a pancake breakfast. Entertainment will also be present, with Elvis on the stage at 12:30 p.m., with The Flashbacks and Campbell River Pipe Band also performing.
"We also have what's called the Wings 'n Wheels Adventure Draw, which is free to enter but you have to enter on the day of and at the event," says Lowe.
Prizes include packages from 49 North Helicopters, Eagle Eye Adventures, and others.
The Peninsula Co-Op is also sponsoring a kid zone from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"Due to that donation, they will be having face painting, a sun swing, some crafts, and the Campbell River Museum comes and they do shoe puppet shows during the day, so the kid zone is pretty popular. There's a lot going on," Lowe says.
A shuttle will be running to and from the event from Timberline School, using two full-sized transit buses.
"The reports on it last year were food, so this year will be even better because they have the extra bus on," says Lowe.
There is also self-locking bike parking, so people are encouraged to peddle to the event if they like.
The event is free to get in, but there are various ways to support Wings 'n Wheels and TeenFlight. Donation buckets are throughout the event. TeenFlight will have a tent, where they will be selling drinks, chips and other snacks as a fundraiser. Wings 'n Wheels are also selling shirts, which Lowe says always sell out.
"There's quite an argument over them over the last few years, people calling me for weeks trying to get them, so come and get your shirts."
