Young Vikes chasing world rugby title

Eight UVic students make Canada’s junior national men’s team

Eight University of Victoria’s athletes will represent Canada at the Rugby Junior World Trophy in Bucharest, Romania.

In the starting roster, brothers Gavin and Lachlan Katz will join Brennig Prevost, as well as Vikes James O’Neill and Jack McCarthy, Tyler Rockwell, Jackson Matthews and Gabriel Casey for the tournament running until Sept. 9.

“This U20 group had two long training camps and qualified by beating the USA U20’s in Houston with a two-game total point series,” said Doug Tate, head coach of the Vikes men’s rugby program.

“Players had to make big sacrifices over the summer with preparation and will benefit from the good coaching team Jeff Williams has put together,” said Tate, adding the players will return to the Vikes, Sept. 15.

In the opening game against Portugal Aug. 28, Canada took a 31-29 loss. They will next face Uruguay Sept. 1.
