Parksville Summer Beach Volleyball is back but with some key modifications to the way it is played.
The popular summer game, organized by Shane and Danielle Hyde of Oceanside Outdoor Sport, started earlier in July after its return to play plan was approved by the City of Parksville.
Shane Hyde said although their numbers are lower than usual, they’re still happy to be able to organize beach volleyball amid concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead of playing just twice a week at the popular sandy courts at the Parksville Community Park, Hyde said that they’ve spread the games throughout three days in order to adhere to social distance protocols and avoid huge crowds. Spectators are being discouraged.
The youth doubles are played on Tuesdays, the adult triples on Wednesday nights and adult doubles on Thursday nights.
Some of the key changes to the game include no blocking, which Hyde said makes the game a lot more challenging as it focuses more on defensive plays. As well, no high fives, fist bumps, handshakes or any other touching is allowed during the games. Game balls are sanitized and will be the only ones used. There are also hand sanitizers at each net.
