In Loving Memory ~
Norman Albert Lowden, affectionately known as "Stormin' Norman," entered the world in Parkdale, Toronto. Born to Margaret Smith and raised by his grandmother, Elizabeth Lowden, Norman's passion for community began early in life with his love for the Parkdale neighbourhood. He played a pivotal role in establishing local youth drop-in programs and securing vital funding for youth initiatives.
By 1973 Norman discovered the west coast, and relocated to Ladysmith before establishing himself in Nanaimo. By the mid-1980s, he embarked on a new chapter, relocating to Protection Island, with his milk truck, where he spent the last 35 years.
Ever creative, Norman's versatile career spanned various endeavours, his love for printing, photography and bikes led him to contribute to the Canadian Biker Magazine, the Nanaimo Museum, and Phantom Press, among others. He dedicated his talents to numerous freelance roles within the non-profit sector.
Norman loved Protection Island and its community. He was a proud member of the island's Fire Department for 18 years and was very proud of coaching the island's inaugural baseball team, the Protection Island Pirates.
Norman is predeceased by his sister, Loretta, his mother, Margaret, and his Uncles Vic and Murray.
He leaves behind his children, Gabriel (wife Courtnay) and Corie (husband Brian), and is fondly remembered by his extended family members, Jase, Tate, Joanne, Ronnie, Kim, Michèle, and Gabi.
Norman has left an important mark on the Parkdale, Nanaimo, and Protection Island communities, resonating deeply with those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Norman's life will be held on Saturday, December 16th, at the Beacon House on Protection Island from 12:30-3pm.
