Multi-vehicle crash on Pat Bay Highway

Four drivers taken to hospital after high-speed collision

UPDATED: 4:50 p.m. with additional details

The Pat Bay Highway has reopened to traffic in both directions after an earlier crash closed both southbound lanes and one northbound lane for hours.

A four-car, high-speed collision slowed traffic up and down the Pat Bay Highway on Thursday afternoon. At around 1:15 p.m. Thursday, emergency crews responded to a crash at the left turn lane onto East Saanich Road.

According to Cst. Glen Davies of Central Saanich Police, one vehicle approached at “full highway speed,” hit a car and spun it into two others.

All four drivers were taken to hospital, two on spine boards, but there were no fatalities. A Saanich Police traffic analyst attended the crash, and as of 3 p.m., southbound lanes were still closed between Island View Road and Keating Cross Road. One northbound lane was opened around 2 p.m. Southbound traffic down the Pat Bay was being diverted to Island View Road.

Davies said the cause of the crash was not yet known, as the drivers and witnesses are still being interviewed.

Detours around the crash site were heavily congested heading into the evening commute and officials asked that motorists be patient as the congestion clears.
