One man was sent to hospital Thursday night after crashing his car into a gas pump at the Fairfield Petro Auto Centre in Victoria.

Shortly after 6 p.m. the white sedan crashed into the pump after the driver suffered a medical condition.

“My staff were told by ambulance attendants that they believe he had a heart attack,” said Greg Whitten, manager at Fairfield Petro.

The pump attendant at the time was able to turn on an emergency switch to deactivate the pump, though Whitten said by design the pump should also stop the flow of gasoline upon impact to prevent any explosions.

BC Emergency Health Services attended the call, followed by the Victoria Police Department.

“The initial investigation indicates that the man suffered a medical event while driving. His passenger was able to slow the vehicle by reaching over and activating the emergency brake,” said VicPD spokesperson Bowen Osoko in a statement.

“While the vehicle and the gas pump suffered significant damage, there was no fire due to the quick actions of gas station staff, safety measures in place at the pump, and the quick response by the Victoria Fire Department, BC Emergency Health Services paramedics and officers.”

The pump will have to be replaced, but final costs have not been calculated.

No updates on the driver’s condition have been released.
