A collision between two bicycles in downtown Nanaimo sent both cyclists to hospital.

The crash happened at about 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, between a man commuting to work on a road bike and a woman on a mountain bike near the Discontent City gate on Front Street.

According to a witness, the woman was trying to beat traffic by rushing across the street from the direction of Port Place shopping centre and didn’t see the road cyclist because her view of him was obstructed by vehicles and she crossed into his path.

According to emergency personnel at the scene, they were initially paged out to a vehicle that had hit two cyclists, but upon arrival, discovered no motor vehicle had been involved.

Both cyclists were taken to hospital with unknown injuries and Nanaimo RCMP is investigating.
