A motorhome was destroyed Wednesday (Aug. 30) afternoon after it caught fire while parked in Colwood.

Colwood Fire Rescue Chief Bryan Erwin said the call for a motorhome on fire came in around 3:30 p.m. and on arrival at the scene at the Colwood Exchange Park and Ride found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

Erwin said crews from Colwood and View Royal Fire Rescue arrived on scene quickly and were able to get the fire under control within 30 minutes and prevent it from spreading significantly to the nearby vegetation, though some bushes were singed.

He said crews were lucky they were able to get the blaze under control quickly and the vehicle was parked far enough away from major vegetation as it had the potential to spread quickly.

No one was injured in the incident, but there was one occupant in the RV at the time of the fire.

Erwin said the fire is believed to have started in the engine compartment due to a mechanical fault before spreading quickly into the living area of the vehicle, but further investigation into the exact cause will be difficult due to the severe damage caused by the fire, which totalled the RV.

On Wednesday, Ocean Boulevard was closed completely for around 15 minutes and reduced to one-lane alternating traffic while the site was cleaned up.
