New builds in Nanaimo won some of the top honours at the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board’s Commercial Building Awards.
The awards were presented Sept. 30, and buildings in and around Nanaimo won nearly half the awards of excellence that were handed out in the 11 categories.
The Village on Third, built by Westmark Construction Ltd., won the award of excellence in the apartment category, while 1851 Dufferin Cres. built by Windley Contracting Ltd. won the award of excellence in the industrial category.
The Cardea development built by Tectonica won the mixed-use award of excellence, the Portsmouth Professional Centre built by Westmark won the award of excellence in the office category and Snaw-Naw-As Market built by Ecklundson Construction Group won the retail award of excellence.
Award of merit winners included the Arbutus, built by WestUrban Developments; the Hub at Pacific Station, built by Westmark; P&R Truck Centre, built by Windley; Qwam Qwum Stuwixwulh School built by Kinetic Construction Ltd.; 91 Chapel, built by Island West Coast Developments; and the Learning Clinic, built by R.W. (Bob) Wall Ltd.
Tourism Tofino built by MKM Projects Ltd. won the evening’s premier award, the Judges’ Choice best overall entry.
Dave Kirk, one of the judges, said the efforts of the “endless array of professionals” involved in the buildings are appreciated.
“We are seeing a continuation of some incredibly impressive projects throughout central and northern Vancouver Island. We’ve seen some marvellous buildings constructed out on the west coast…” Kirk said. “It’s a continuation and the evolution of buildings in our region.”
